While on routine patrol, Captain Jean-Luc Picard gets word from Starfleet Headquarters that the Borg, an insidious race of half-machine, half-organic aliens, have entered Federation Space and are on a direct course for Earth. Violating direct orders to remain uninvolved, Picard leads the newly commissioned Enterprise E into Starfleet’s massive assault against their deadliest foe. After the attack on Earth fails, the Borg institute a plan to go back in time to Earth at its most vulnerable time in history, the dark age after the Third World War. The crew of the Enterprise follow the Borg back to a missle complex in Montana. The date: April 4, 2063, the day before the legendary flight of Zefram Cochrane’s warp drive rocket, the Phoenix. This historic flight would ultimately lead to the initial meeting between humans and beings from another world and subsequently, the birth of the United Federation of Planets. It is this “first contact” that the Borg are trying to prevent.

The Nerdlucks, a grouchy gang of tiny space creatures, have been dispatched by their boss, the ruthless, belligerent Swackhammer, to kidnap Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes cohorts and export them to Moron Mountain, Swackhammer’s failing theme park on the Nerdluck’s boring planet. Bugs challenges the small, weak aliens to a fateful basketball tournament: if the Looney Tunes win, they’ll remain on Earth. But if the aliens win, Bugs and company are headed into the hands of Swackhammer. Then Bugs discovers the Nerdlucks’ ability to instantly “absorb” new skills–an ability that lets them siphon basketball talent from the likes of NBA stars Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, and Larry Johnson, turning the Nerdlucks into the powerful, speedy, unprincipled and monstrously gifted Monstars! Bugs knows he needs some serious help. But where can he go? Basketball’s best players are all having their skills “absorbed” by the aliens. Of course, there’s a baseball player he happens to know…

Smart, funny, sickly and sometimes just plain unconscious, Mark Renton is a hero of our times. Set in an underbelly of Edinburgh the city fathers never dreamed of, this is the story of Mark and his so-called friends–a bunch of losers, liars, psychos, thieves and junkies. This tragi-comedy charts the disintegration of their friendship as they proceed, seemingly inevitably, towards self-destruction. Mark alone has the insight and opportunity to escape his fate–but does he really want to “choose life”? On and off heroin, he continually weighs the pros and cons of straight living: “car, career, family, fucking big television, washing machines, compact disc players, electrical tin openers, good health, low cholesterol, dental insurance, starter home, leisurewear, and a choice of sweaters…” When he breaks it all down, choosing life doesn’t seem all that promising and he’s off to the next scheme and score.

Church of the Holy Angels and its grammar school were the center of Hell’s Kitchen in the 1960s–a place of refuge for many neighborhood kids from troubled homes. Father Bobby had his favorites–among them were Lorenzo and his pals, Michael, John, and Tommy. Because their blue-collar, hardworking parents were more often fighting than not, the four boys formed a kind of family of their own. Then, one boring summer day, a street prank gone dangerously awry resulted in the quartet being sent to the Wilkinson Home for Boys in upstate New York where they were tortured, abused and raped under the leadership of a sadistic guard named Sean Nokes. A decade and a half later, nothing can erase their painful memories, but the lessons of Hell’s Kitchen allow them to even the score of the terrible hand that Fate had dealt them. In their shocking retaliation, they are daringly aided by Father Bobby and an aging, shadowy mob figure, both of whom have known the four boys since their childhoods.
